Thanksgiving Prayer

For the table, the day, and the One who gave us all of it.

“Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good; for his loving kindness endures forever.”Psalm 136:1 · World English Bible

For Thanksgiving morning, or any moment you want to stop and say thank You.

Lord, today I stop to say thank You. Thank You for life and breath, for food on the table and a roof over my head. Thank You for the people who love me, and for the ones who prayed when I couldn’t. Thank You for the good things I notice, and the ones I don’t. This year was not easy, but You were faithful in all of it. I don’t want to rush past that. Let my thanks be real, not just polite. Teach me to see Your hand in everything. In Jesus’ name, amen.

To pray at the table, or in the quiet before the day begins.

Father, this Thanksgiving, we gather to give You thanks. For the harvest and the food, we thank You. For the work of many hands that brought it to us, we thank You. For health, for home, for freedom, and for peace, we thank You. For the hard things that taught us to depend on You, we thank You. Slow us down today. Let us look up before we dig in. May this day remind us that every good thing comes from Your hand, and that Your mercy is new every morning. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A simple prayer of thanks, for an ordinary day or a special one.

Lord, I come to You with a thankful heart. Thank You for waking me up today. Thank You for the small gifts I overlook: a warm cup of coffee, a kind word, a quiet minute. Thank You for forgiving me when I forget to thank You. Thank You for being patient with me. I offer You my gratitude, and I offer You myself. Use me today to bless someone else. Let my life say thank You even when my words run out. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when you have thirty seconds. Say it before you eat, or before you walk in the door.

Lord, thank You for this day and everything in it. Thank You for the food, the people, and the peace we have. Help us remember that every good gift is from You. Keep our hearts grateful and our words kind. Bless this time together. In Jesus’ name, amen.

To ask God for a thankful heart before the holiday arrives, especially if this year has been hard.

God, Thanksgiving is coming, and I want to be truly thankful. But I’ll be honest: some years it’s hard. If I’m tired, or grieving, or worried about next month, I still want to find the thanks that is there. Open my eyes to what You have given. Soften the part of me that complains. Give me a heart that can say thank You even in a hard year. Let this holiday be a time of rest, not just a to-do list. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the whole day: the morning, the meal, and the evening after.

Lord of this day, thank You for it. This morning I thank You for rest and for a fresh start. At the table I thank You for the food and everyone who made it possible. Tonight I will thank You for the conversations that made me laugh and the ones that made me think. Keep me present all day. Keep me from comparing what I have with what others have. Let me notice who is alone and make room for them. Thank You for the gift of today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Spoken straight to God, with nothing asked.

God, I’m not asking for anything right now. I just want to thank You. Thank You for who You are: faithful, merciful, and kind. Thank You for the way You have carried me. Thank You for forgiving what I thought couldn’t be forgiven. Thank You for answered prayers, and for the ones You answered differently than I hoped. Looking back, I see that You were there. You are worthy of all my thanks, and so much more. I give You my gratitude today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read one before the meal, or let each person at the table read a verse.

Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good; for his loving kindness endures forever. Psalm 136:1

This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it! Psalm 118:24

The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart has trusted in him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart greatly rejoices. With my song I will thank him. Psalm 28:7

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6

Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Before the day starts, a few words of thanks.

Lord, before I look at my phone or my list, I want to start with thanks. Thank You for this morning and for the breath in my lungs. Thank You for what is going well, and for what You are still working on. Help me notice three good things today, and say thank You for each one out loud. When I’m tempted to complain, remind me of what I already have. I begin this day grateful, and I want to end it grateful. In Jesus’ name, amen.
