Prayer of Gratitude

For any day you want to stop, look around, and say thank You.

“Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.”Psalm 107:1 · World English Bible

For any day, when you want to stop and notice what you’ve been given.

Lord, I stop right now to say thank You. I don’t want to rush past what You’ve given me. Thank You for the ordinary gifts: a bed to sleep in, water to drink, people who know my name. Thank You for the hard things that made me lean on You. Thank You for every time You carried me and I didn’t notice. Forgive me for the days I complain more than I give thanks. Teach me to see what is good. I’m grateful, and I want my life to show it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Pick the one that fits today.

Spoken straight to God, with nothing asked in return.

God, I come to You with nothing to ask today, only to give thanks. Thank You for who You are: faithful, patient, and good. Thank You for loving me before I knew You. Thank You for forgiveness that I could never earn. Thank You for being with me in the places I thought I was alone. Everything I have is from You, and I know it. Receive my gratitude, small as it is. Let my heart stay soft and thankful, in the good days and in the hard ones. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer to say any time your heart is full, or when you need it to be.

Father, I choose gratitude today. Not because everything is easy, but because You are good. I’m thankful for my breath, my body, and this new day. I’m thankful for the people who love me, and for the ones who are hard to love. I’m thankful for what I have, and for what You’ve kept me from. When my thoughts start to complain, bring me back to thanks. Make gratitude my habit, and not just my mood. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when you want your thanks to carry weight: specific, honest, and out loud.

Lord, I want to thank You with my whole heart, and I want to be specific. Thank You for the job that pays the bills, even when it’s tiring. Thank You for the friend who texted at the right time. Thank You for the prayer I thought You didn’t hear, and the answer I only understand now. Thank You for mercy that meets me every morning. I name these because I don’t want to forget them. Gratitude changes me, Lord. Let it break open every fear and complaint in my heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when you only have a moment.

Lord, thank You for today. Thank You for the people in my life, and for the things I can’t see You doing. I’m grateful for Your goodness. Thank You for being with me. Keep my heart thankful. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when you wake up and realize each day is a gift.

Lord, thank You for another day. I didn’t earn it, and I couldn’t have guaranteed it. Thank You for the breath in my lungs and the chance to start again. Thank You for mercies that are new this morning. Whatever this day holds, I want to spend it well. Help me love people patiently, work honestly, and notice the good. If I get to the end of it, I’ll thank You again. For now, I thank You for today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For after the recovery, the good report, or the long-awaited turn for the better.

Father, thank You for healing. Whether it came quickly or slowly, whether through doctors or through prayer or both, I know it comes from You. Thank You for the days I thought I wouldn’t see. Thank You for the people who stayed with me and prayed. I don’t take this health for granted. Use my strength for good. For those who are still waiting for healing, I ask You to be near them. Thank You for being the God who heals. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when something you prayed about has finally come.

Lord, You answered. I almost can’t believe it. Thank You for hearing me when I was worn out from asking. Thank You for the timing, which I didn’t understand while I waited. Forgive me for the times I doubted You. You are faithful, even when I am not. Let me remember this the next time I’m waiting. And thank You also for the prayers You answered differently than I asked, because I can see now that Your way was better. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read these slowly, and let each one give you something to thank God for.

Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever. Psalm 107:1

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name. For Yahweh is good. His loving kindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:4-5

Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him. Colossians 3:17

Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it! Psalm 118:24

Before anything else, start the day with thanks.

Lord, before I reach for my phone, I reach for You. Thank You for this morning. Thank You for sleep, for shelter, and for another chance to love well. I’m grateful for what I have, even the things I forget to notice. Help me find three things to thank You for today, and thank You for each one out loud. When the day gets busy, let gratitude be what I come back to. I start with thanks, and I want to end with thanks. In Jesus’ name, amen.
