Thanksgiving Prayer for Family

For the table, the people around it, and the ones we wish were here.

“Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.”Psalm 107:1 · World English Bible

For the moment before the meal, when everyone is finally in the same room.

Lord, thank You for my family. Not a perfect one, but the one You gave me. Thank You for the people at this table, and for the ones we wish were here. Thank You for the years we’ve shared, for the stories we keep telling, and for the ways You have held us together when things could have fallen apart. Forgive us for the times we’ve taken each other for granted. Bless every person here with Your peace. Let this day be full of laughter, patience, and grace. We are grateful, and we know where it all comes from. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a table with relatives and the friends who feel like family.

Father, we come to this table with grateful hearts. Thank You for the family You gave us by birth, and the family You gave us by friendship. Some of us are related, and some of us just showed up and stayed. Both are Your gifts. Thank You for everyone who made room for someone else this year. Bless the hands that cooked, the ones that set the table, and the ones that will do the dishes. Let no one here feel like a guest or a stranger. Make us one in joy and one in thanks. In Jesus’ name, amen.

To say out loud before the food is served. Short enough to pray with everyone’s hands held.

Lord, thank You for this food and for the hands that prepared it. Thank You for the people sitting around this table. Thank You for a roof, for warmth, and for enough. We remember those who have less today, and we ask You to provide for them. Bless this meal to our bodies, and this time together to our hearts. Keep our conversation kind and our laughter easy. We give thanks for everything You have done. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when you want to say what family has meant to you, beyond the usual thank you.

God, I want to thank You for what my family has taught me. They taught me how to share, how to argue, and how to forgive. They knew me when I was small, and they still remember. Even in the hard seasons, You used them to shape me. Thank You for the prayers of grandparents, the sacrifices of parents, and the quiet loyalty of brothers and sisters. For the ones who are no longer here, thank You for the way they still live in our stories. Help me pass on what I have been given. In Jesus’ name, amen.

To read together on Thanksgiving morning, before the day gets busy.

Good morning, Lord. This Thanksgiving, we begin with You. Thank You for waking us up to this day. Thank You for the home we share and the people in it. Give us patience in the kitchen, grace with each other, and eyes to see what is good. If there is tension in this house today, soften it. If someone is hurting, help us notice. Let thanksgiving be more than a meal today. Let it be the way we live. We are grateful, Lord, for You and for each other. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when you only have a few seconds. Say it before the food, or send it in a message.

Lord, thank You for this day, this food, and these people. Bless our family and our friends. Keep us close to You and to each other. Where someone is missing, comfort us. Where someone is new, help us welcome them. We are thankful for everything You have given us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For an ordinary evening, when nothing special happened and you are simply grateful.

Lord, tonight I’m just grateful. Nothing special happened today. We got through it together, and that is enough to thank You for. Thank You for the people who share my home and my life. Thank You for the ordinary things: the noise, the dishes, the plans that change. Keep us safe tonight. Watch over each person while they sleep. Let our home be a place where everyone is welcome and loved. Thank You for every small kindness we gave one another today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read one before the meal, or let each person at the table read a verse.

Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever. Psalm 107:1

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, and bless his name. For Yahweh is good. His loving kindness endures forever, his faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100:4-5

See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity! Psalm 133:1

Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward. Psalm 127:3

Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him. Colossians 3:17

Before the house wakes up, or before you leave it.

Lord, before the day gets loud, I want to thank You for my family. Thank You for the ones asleep down the hall, and the ones I’ll call later. Go ahead of each of them into today. Where they are worried, give them peace. Where they are tired, give them strength. Help me be patient, and quick to say thank you. Let me not leave this house without telling someone I love them. I start this day grateful, and I want to end it the same way. In Jesus’ name, amen.
