Waking Up at 3 AM

What the Bible does and doesn’t say about waking in the night, and a prayer to pray when you do.

“In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety.”Psalm 4:8 · World English Bible

Honest answer: the Bible doesn’t give 3 a.m. a special meaning. But you are awake, so pray.

I rise before dawn and cry for help. I put my hope in your words. My eyes stay open through the night watches, that I might meditate on your word. Psalm 119:147-148

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones. Psalm 127:2

Lord, I’m awake, and I don’t know why. It might be stress, it might be my body, or it might be You. I’m not going to guess. I’m just going to talk to You. Whatever is on my mind, I give it to You. Give me peace, and help me sleep again. Thank You that You never sleep. In Jesus’ name, amen.

If you sense He is nudging you, the safest answer is to listen.

At midnight I will rise to give thanks to you, because of your righteous ordinances. Psalm 119:62

Father, if You woke me up, speak. If You didn’t, I’m still here to listen. Show me whether You want me to pray for someone, or whether I just need rest. Quiet my thoughts so I can hear You. Whatever You say, I’ll test it against Your word. I trust You with this hour. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Samuel was woken in the night, and learned to say: speak, I’m listening.

Yahweh came, and stood, and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak; for your servant hears.” 1 Samuel 3:10

Lord, like Samuel, I’m awake in the dark. If You are calling, help me recognize Your voice. Speak, and I’m listening. If it is only worry, help me hand it over. Teach me the difference, and give me a heart that says yes to You at any hour. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What it does say about the night: God gives sleep, and He watches while we rest.

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety. Psalm 4:8

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones. Psalm 127:2

God, Your word says You give sleep to the ones You love. Tonight I can’t sleep, so I’m asking You to give me rest. Take my worries, my to-do list, and the thoughts that circle. Let me lie down in peace, because You keep me safe. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The fourth watch of the night, when Jesus came to the disciples on the sea.

Jesus, You came to the disciples in the fourth watch of the night, when they were struggling against the wind. You come to me in the dark too. Come to my struggle tonight. Calm what I can’t calm. Remind me that You walk on the water I’m afraid of. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the morning after you didn’t sleep.

Lord, I didn’t sleep well, and I’m tired. Give me strength I don’t have. Help me be patient with myself and with people today. Let rest come tonight. Thank You that Your mercies are new this morning, even when I’m not. In Jesus’ name, amen.
