Prayers and Bible Verses for Depression

The one to pray when it’s heavy.

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18

He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand. Psalm 40:2

Lord, I’m so low, and I don’t have the strength to pray much. Be near. You are close to the brokenhearted. Lift me. Give me one small reason to hope today. Show me who to call, and give me the courage to call. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What the Bible says to the discouraged.

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God. Psalm 42:11

This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:21-23

God, my soul is cast down. Help me hope in You. I’m pressed on every side, but You haven’t let me be crushed. You are the lifter of my head. Hold me up while I can’t stand on my own. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When you can’t see any way forward.

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Father, I feel hopeless. I can’t see a way through. Be my hope, because I have none of my own. Hold on to me, since I can’t hold on to You. Let one small thing give me a reason to keep going. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When it’s worst after dark.

For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning. Psalm 30:5

Lord, the night makes it worse. Be here in the dark. Let me rest. Let morning come, and let it bring a little more light. Keep me safe tonight. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Prayer and help together.

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

God, I need help. Give me the courage to ask for it: to talk to someone, to see a doctor or a counselor. Use the people and the tools You’ve put around me. I’m not too much, and I’m not alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Getting up is the first thing.

Lord, I got up, and that’s what I can do today. Help me do one more thing. Be gentle with me. Let me know I’m loved. In Jesus’ name, amen.
