Prayers for Focus

When your mind is scattered and you can’t settle on anything.

You will keep whoever's mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3

Turn my eyes away from looking at worthless things. Revive me in your ways. Psalm 119:37

Lord, my mind is all over the place. I’m pulled in ten directions, and I can’t settle on any of them. Quiet the noise. Turn my eyes away from what doesn’t matter, and bring me back to You. Give me peace that steadies me, and clarity about the next thing to do. Help me do one thing at a time, and do it well. I give You my distractions. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the work day: one task at a time, with Him.

Let your eyes look straight ahead. Fix your gaze directly before you. Proverbs 4:25

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Colossians 3:23

Father, I have a lot to do today, and I’m asking You to help me focus. Let my eyes look straight ahead, and my mind stay on what’s in front of me. Help me work as if I’m working for You. Keep me from the endless checking, the scrolling, and the second-guessing. Give me energy for the hard parts, and rest at the end. Let me finish in peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For studying, exams, or any task that needs your full attention.

God, I need to concentrate, and my mind keeps wandering. Clear my head. Help me remember what I’ve learned, and understand what I haven’t. Calm my nerves, and give me patience with myself when it’s slow. Don’t let me give up when it gets hard. I want to do this well, and I trust You with the result. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the long haul: something you started and don’t want to quit.

Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

Lord, I started this with energy, and now I’m losing it. Help me stay focused on what You’ve called me to. Let me forget what’s behind and keep pressing toward what’s ahead. Don’t let me be pulled off by comparison, or by something shinier. Remind me why I began. Give me the discipline to keep going on the days I don’t feel like it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Fix your eyes on Him, and everything else gets smaller.

Therefore let us also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2

Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth. Colossians 3:2

Jesus, I fix my eyes on You. Everything else looks smaller when I look at You first. Take what I’ve been chasing, and put it in its place. Set my mind on things above, and let my day follow from there. Be the center of my thoughts, my work, and my rest. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when you sit down to pray and your mind runs off.

Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth. Psalm 46:10

Lord, I sit down to pray, and my mind runs off. I’m thinking about my list, my phone, and what I forgot. I’m sorry. I’m here now. Help me be still and know that You are God. When my mind wanders, bring me back gently, and don’t let me feel guilty about it. Thank You that You aren’t annoyed with me. You’re just glad I came. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before the day pulls you in every direction, start with Him.

Lord, before the day pulls me in every direction, I’m choosing to start with You. Set my mind on what matters most today. Show me the one thing I shouldn’t skip, and help me say no to the rest. Keep me from distraction, and keep me close to You. I trust You with the day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
