Prayers for Discernment

Prayers for wisdom, clear sight, and knowing what to do next.

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.”James 1:5 · World English Bible

When you don’t know what to do, and need to see clearly.

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. James 1:5

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

Lord, I don’t know what to do, and I’m asking You for wisdom, as You told me to. I can’t see far enough ahead. Show me what is true and what is only convincing. Quiet the voices that pull me in every direction, including my own fears. Give me clarity about the next step, and the courage to take it. I trust You to lead me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Slow down before you decide.

I am your servant. Give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies. Psalm 119:125

Father, I’m praying for discernment in this season. Give me understanding, so I can know what is from You and what is not. Help me slow down before I decide. Let me listen before I speak, and pray before I act. Surround me with wise counsel, and keep me from rushing. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Like Solomon: not riches, not speed, but an understanding heart.

Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this great people of yours? 1 Kings 3:9

For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

God, like Solomon, I’m asking for an understanding heart. I don’t need riches, power, or quick answers. I need wisdom to tell right from wrong, and discernment to know what to do with it. You give wisdom generously, so I’m asking. Fill me with it. Let what I decide honor You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a friend, a leader, or someone you love who is facing a big decision.

Lord, I’m praying for someone who has a decision to make. You know what’s at stake. Give them wisdom and clear sight. Protect them from bad advice and from pressure. Help them hear You above everyone else. Give them peace about what You show them. I trust You to guide them. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Three steps: ask, listen, and test.

Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good. 1 Thessalonians 5:21

Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

Lord, here is how I’m praying: I ask, I listen, and I test. I ask You for wisdom. I listen for Your voice in Your word and in the quiet. And I test what I hear, against the Bible and with people who love You. Renew my mind, so I can know what is good and pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Bible says discernment grows with practice.

But solid food is for those who are full grown, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil. Hebrews 5:14

Yes, if you call out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures: then you will understand the fear of Yahweh, and find the knowledge of God. Proverbs 2:3-5

Father, Your word says discernment grows by practice. Train me. Let me search for wisdom like hidden treasure, and let me use what I find. Sharpen my senses to tell good from evil, and truth from a good-sounding lie. Make me patient with the process, and faithful in the small choices. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before the day begins, ask Him to help you see.

Lord, before this day begins, give me discernment. Help me see people and situations the way You do. Let me notice what I’d usually miss. Keep me from being fooled by what looks good. When I have to decide, give me peace about the right choice. In Jesus’ name, amen.
