Bible Verses for Marriage

What the Bible says about marriage, with a short prayer for each verse.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.”Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 · World English Bible

The ones people read at weddings, and still need years later.

Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. Genesis 2:24

Lord, thank You for marriage. Teach us to be patient and kind, and to keep no score of wrongs. Let our love bear all things, believe all things, and never fail. Make us one. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When love needs rebuilding.

Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection. Colossians 3:14

Many waters can’t quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, he would be utterly scorned. Song of Solomon 8:7

Father, let love be the bond that holds us together. Above all, help us walk in love. Where we’ve grown cold, warm us. Let our love be strong, like a seal on the heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The three-fold cord.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one keep warm alone? If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate. Mark 10:9

Lord, make our marriage strong. Let a cord of three strands, with You in it, not be quickly broken. Help us lift each other when we fall. Keep us from drifting. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What each is called to.

Nevertheless each of you must also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Ephesians 5:33

Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. Hebrews 13:4

God, help me do my part. Let the husband love, and the wife respect, in the way You designed. Make our love honest and tender. Keep our marriage honored among all. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before the day pulls you apart.

Lord, bless my marriage today. Help me say one loving thing. Thank You for the person beside me. Keep us close. In Jesus’ name, amen.
