Back to School Prayer

A new school year. Prayers for the first morning, for the classroom, and for everyone who walks through the doors.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.”Psalm 32:8 · World English Bible

Short enough for a class or a school assembly to say together at the start of the day. Often searched as “prayer for school”.

Lord, thank You for this new school day. Open our minds to learn and our hearts to be kind. Help us listen well, work hard, and treat each other with respect. Bless our teachers with patience and wisdom. Keep everyone in this school safe today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

School prayers

Pick the one that fits today.

For parents, before the year starts. Often searched as “prayer for a new school year”.

Father, a new school year is starting. New teachers, new classes, new routines, maybe new friends. Go ahead of my kids into all of it. Calm their nerves on the first morning. Help them find a good friend early. Give them a teacher who sees them. And when it gets hard in October, keep them going. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the drop-off. Often searched as “first day of school prayer for child”.

Lord, today is the first day. My child is walking into that building without me, and part of me wants to follow. Hold their hand where I can’t. Give them courage at the classroom door, a kind face at lunch, and a good story to tell me at pickup. And give me peace while I wait. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a student to pray on their own. Often searched as “short prayer for students”.

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. James 1:5

Lord, I’m a student, and some days it’s a lot: classes, homework, friends, and figuring out who I am. Give me focus when I study and rest when I’m done. Help me be honest, work hard, and be kind to the kid no one talks to. Remind me that my worth isn’t my grades. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For freshmen away from home for the first time, and the parents driving home without them.

Father, bless the college students starting this semester, especially the ones away from home for the first time. Give them wisdom with their freedom, good roommates, and real friends. Protect them from harm and from bad choices. Keep their faith alive in a new place, and lead them to a church that feels like home. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a teacher to pray before the students arrive. Often searched as “back to school prayer for teachers”.

Lord, my classroom is ready, and the kids arrive tomorrow. Give me patience for the hard days and joy in the good ones. Help me see each student as You see them, especially the ones who are hardest to reach. Give me energy for the long weeks, and wisdom for the moments no training covered. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a staff meeting, a parent group, or a church service at the start of the year.

Lord, bless the students and teachers in our schools. Give the students open minds and the teachers clear words. Let respect run both ways in every classroom. Help each teacher see the students behind the test scores, and help each student see the teacher behind the rules. Give everyone a year of real learning and real growth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For safety, and for the kid who gets left out or bullied.

Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more. Psalm 121:8

Father, keep our schools safe this year: from violence, from accidents, and from cruelty. Protect the child who sits alone at lunch and the one who gets picked on in the hallway. Give them one friend and one adult who notices. Give courage to the kids who could stand up for them. Watch over every classroom, every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the backpack that’s almost as big as they are.

Lord, my little one is starting kindergarten. Their backpack is almost as big as they are. Let them love learning from the very first day. Bless their teacher with gentleness. Help them make a friend, find the bathroom, and not be afraid. Thank You for this milestone, and help me let go a little. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before the rush of breakfast, lunches, and finding shoes.

Good morning, Lord. It’s a school day. Before the rush of breakfast, lunches, and finding shoes, I give this day to You. Go with each of us to class and to work. Help us learn something good and be kind to someone. Bring us all home safe. In Jesus’ name, amen.
