Glory to God in the highest. Christmas prayers for your family, your table, and the people who find this season hard.

““Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.””Luke 2:14 · World English Bible

Often searched as “holiday prayers christmas” or “christmas prayers”.

Lord Jesus, thank You for Christmas. Thank You for coming as a baby, for choosing a stable, for sending the news to shepherds first. In all the lights and noise of this season, don’t let me miss You. Make my heart a place where You are welcome. Fill this Christmas with Your peace, and let Your love reach every person at our table. Merry Christmas, Lord. Amen.

Pick the one that fits today.

Short enough to say before the meal or text to someone. Often searched as “short prayers for christmas”.

Lord Jesus, You came to us as a baby. Thank You for the manger, the angels, and the good news of great joy. Be born in my heart again this Christmas. Let Your peace fill this home today, and let Your light reach everyone I love. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the whole family to pray together. Often searched as “family christmas prayer”.

Father, here we are together for Christmas. Thank You for this family, for the ones in this room and the ones far away. Forgive us for the times we’ve hurt each other this year. Let laughter come easily today and old arguments stay buried. Help us see Jesus in each other, and keep us close in the year ahead. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A blessing to send in a card or a text. Often searched as “christmas prayers and blessings”.

May the peace the angels sang about fill your home this Christmas. May the joy the shepherds felt find you too. May the light that led the wise men guide you into the new year. And may you know, deep down, that God came near because He loves you. Merry Christmas. Amen.

For the empty chair at the table this year.

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18

Lord, this is the first Christmas without them. Their chair is empty, their stocking is still in the box, and everyone is trying not to say their name. You know this ache. Comfort me today. Let me laugh when something reminds me of them, and cry without shame when I need to. Thank You for the hope that this isn’t the end. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Living alone, far from home, or the kids are at the other house this year.

Jesus, You were born far from home, in a borrowed place, among strangers. You know what it’s like when Christmas doesn’t look like the cards. I’m on my own this year, and the quiet is loud. Be my company today. Bring someone to mind I can call, and someone who might call me. Let me know I’m not forgotten. In Your name, amen.

Nurses, first responders, soldiers, store clerks, and everyone on shift today.

Father, bless everyone working today while the rest of us celebrate: nurses and doctors, police and firefighters, soldiers far from home, cashiers, drivers, and the people keeping the lights on. Give them patience on a long shift, kindness from strangers, and a little Christmas joy along the way. Watch over the families missing them at home. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a family gathering you’re a little nervous about.

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful. John 14:27

Lord, I’m nervous about Christmas with my family. You know the old wounds and the topics that turn into fights. Guard my mouth. Help me listen more than I talk, let go of what doesn’t need to be said, and love the people who are hardest to love. Let peace be stronger than tension at our table this year. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When the wrapping paper is gone and the house is quiet.

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel”; which is, being interpreted, “God with us.” Matthew 1:23

Lord, the wrapping paper is in the trash and the house is quiet. Christmas is over, but You are still Immanuel, God with us, on this ordinary morning too. Help me keep the wonder of the manger in the days ahead, long after the decorations come down. Go with me into today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
