Veterans Day Prayer

November 11. Prayers of thanks for those who served, and for the people who served alongside them at home.

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”John 15:13 · World English Bible

For November 11. Often searched as “prayer for veterans day” or “veterans day prayers”.

Lord, today we remember the men and women who served. Thank You for their courage, for the years they gave, and for the families who waited at home. Some came back carrying more than anyone can see. Heal what still hurts. Give them good work, friends who understand, and peace when the nights are long. Let us honor them with more than words. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Veterans Day prayers

Pick the one that fits today.

For a church service, school assembly, or ceremony, read by one person on behalf of everyone.

Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance. Psalm 33:12

Gracious God, we gather to thank You for the veterans among us and for all who have served. We remember those who left home and family, those who came back changed, and those who did not come back at all. Bless the veterans here today. Comfort the families who still carry the cost. Teach us to keep our promises to them long after the ceremony ends. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For PTSD, sleepless nights, and the memories that don’t fade.

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18

Father, some wounds don’t show up on an X-ray. You see the veteran who still scans every room, who can’t sleep, who flinches at fireworks, who drinks to forget. Meet them inside the memories they can’t put down. Lead them to good counselors, patient friends, and a church that doesn’t look away. Remind them that asking for help takes courage too. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Spouses, kids, parents, and caregivers served too.

Lord, bless the families who served too: the spouses who packed up and moved again and again, the kids who changed schools, the parents who waited by the phone. Bless the caregivers who now help a veteran through the hard days. Give them rest, real support, and people who notice. Thank You for everything they carried that no medal will ever show. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the ones who left the uniform and lost the mission, the routine, and the team.

Those who wait for the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

God, leaving the military can feel like losing a whole world: the mission, the routine, the people who had your back. For every veteran who feels lost now, give a new sense of purpose. Open doors to good work. Bring friends who understand. Where there is loneliness, send a brother or sister. You are not finished with their story. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In the first person, for a veteran to pray on their own.

Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

Lord, You know where I’ve been and what I’ve seen. Some days I’m proud of it. Some days I can’t stop thinking about the ones who didn’t make it home. Take the guilt I was never meant to carry. Give me sleep tonight and a reason to get up tomorrow. Help me believe I still have something to give. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For VA hospitals, nursing homes, and veterans with no visitors this year.

Father, be near the veterans in hospitals and nursing homes today: the ones recovering from surgery, the ones whose memories are fading, the ones who won’t get a single visitor. Bless the nurses, doctors, and volunteers who care for them. Let someone stop by today and say thank you. Hold each of them close, and give them peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before the parades and the posts, a minute of thanks.

Lord, it’s Veterans Day. Before I check the news, I want to stop and give thanks. Bring to mind the veterans I know by name. Show me one I can call, thank, or help today. And for the freedom I’ll enjoy this morning without even thinking about it, thank You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
