Graduation Prayer

For the graduate, for the family, and for the ceremony. Including an invocation and a benediction you can read aloud.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”Proverbs 3:5-6 · World English Bible

For a graduate you love. Often searched as “prayer for a graduation”.

Lord, thank You for bringing this graduate to this day. Thank You for every early morning, every late night, every teacher and friend along the way. As they cross this stage, let them know how proud we are and how faithful You’ve been. Lead them into what’s next, and stay close to them there. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Graduation prayers

Pick the one that fits today.

An invocation to open the ceremony, read by a student, pastor, or teacher on behalf of everyone. About a minute aloud. Often searched as “prayer for commencement”.

Gracious God, we gather today to celebrate these graduates and the work that brought them here. Thank You for the families who supported them, the teachers who believed in them, and the friends who walked beside them. Bless this ceremony with joy and gratitude. And as these graduates go out, guide them, protect them, and make them a blessing to the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A blessing to close the ceremony, spoken over the graduates.

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8

Graduates, may the Lord bless you and keep you as you go from this place. May He give you wisdom for every decision ahead, courage for every new beginning, and friends for every season. May you work with honesty, love with generosity, and walk humbly with your God. Go in peace. Amen.

For this year’s graduates, the sure ones and the unsure ones. Often searched as “graduate prayer”.

Father, I pray for the graduates this year. Some know exactly what’s next; some have no idea. Give clarity to the ones who are unsure and humility to the ones who are sure. Protect them as they move out, move on, and start over. Let them never outgrow their need for You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Short enough for a card or a toast. Often searched as “short graduation prayers”.

Lord, thank You for this day and this achievement. Bless this graduate with wisdom, courage, and joy in the next chapter. Open the right doors and close the wrong ones. Keep them close to You wherever they go. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For parents watching a child leave home.

Lord, my child is graduating from high school. It went so fast. Thank You for every grade, every game, every friend, and even the hard years. As they leave home for work, college, or the military, go with them. Keep their faith alive and their choices wise. And help me let go well. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the graduate to pray: the degree is done, and real life begins.

God, after years of classes, papers, and exams, it’s done. Thank You for the provision that got me here, the people who helped, and the strength You gave when I wanted to quit. Now the job search, the move, and real life begin. Guide my steps. Give me work that matters and a life that honors You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the graduate tired of being asked “So what’s next?”

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

Lord, everyone keeps asking what’s next, and I don’t have an answer yet. Calm my anxiety about the future. Help me take the next small step without seeing the whole path. Your word is a lamp to my feet, not a floodlight. Show me just enough for today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before the gowns, the photos, and the crowds.

Good morning, Lord. It’s graduation day. Before the gowns, the photos, and the crowds, I want to stop and say thank You. You’ve been faithful every step of the way. Let today be joyful and full of gratitude. In Jesus’ name, amen.
