Prayer for Sleep

For the nights your body is tired and your mind won’t stop. Pray, or press play and listen.

“It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.”Psalm 127:2 · World English Bible

Often searched as “sleep prayer” or “prayer to help me sleep”.

Lord, I need sleep tonight. My body is tired, but my mind won’t slow down. Your Word says You grant sleep to those You love, so I’m asking You for it now. Quiet my thoughts. Relax my shoulders, my jaw, my breathing. Let me stop trying so hard to fall asleep, and simply rest in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Prayers for sleep

Pick the one that fits today.

For another night of lying awake. If sleeplessness goes on for weeks, please talk to a doctor too: that’s not a lack of faith. Often searched as “prayer for insomnia”.

Father, it’s another night I can’t sleep. I’ve tried everything, and I’m frustrated and worn out. You never sleep, so You’re awake with me. Instead of fighting the clock, let me spend this time with You. If sleep comes, thank You. If it doesn’t, give me strength for tomorrow anyway. And if this keeps going, lead me to the help I need. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Often searched as “prayer for sleep and peace”.

You will keep whoever's mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3

Lord, keep me in perfect peace tonight as I fix my mind on You. Let peace settle over this room, this bed, this restless heart. I won’t solve anything else tonight. I’m putting it all down. Give me sleep that is deep and peaceful, and dreams that don’t frighten me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before a big day. Often searched as “prayer for good night sleep”.

Lord, I have a big day tomorrow and I need a good night’s sleep. Help me fall asleep quickly and stay asleep. Let my body recover and my mind reset. Keep away the middle-of-the-night wake-up. And when the morning comes, let me get up rested and ready for whatever You’ve planned. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When the what-ifs line up as soon as you lie down.

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Lord, anxiety gets louder at night. The what-ifs line up as soon as I lie down. I’m giving them to You one by one: the money, the health worry, the conversation tomorrow. You care about every one of them. Trade my anxious thoughts for Your peace, the kind that guards my heart and mind. Then let me sleep. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a tiredness sleep alone doesn’t fix. Often searched as “prayers about rest”.

Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Jesus, You said, Come to me, all you who are weary, and I will give you rest. I’m weary. Not just tired in my body, but tired in my soul. I’m coming to You now. Take the heavy load I’ve been carrying, and give me Your rest: the kind of rest that sleep alone can’t give. In Your name, amen.

Breathe in on the first half of each line, out on the second. Press play and breathe along.

Breathe in: You are with me. Breathe out: I am safe. Breathe in: You never sleep. Breathe out: so I can. Breathe in: Your peace. Breathe out: my worry. Breathe in: Lord Jesus. Breathe out: I trust You. Amen.

When you wake up with your heart pounding.

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3

Lord, I woke up from a bad dream and my heart is pounding. It wasn’t real, but it felt real. Calm my body. Remind me where I am, and that You’re here with me. Wash those images out of my mind and replace them with Your peace. Guard the rest of my sleep tonight. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For replaying today and rehearsing tomorrow.

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient. Matthew 6:34

Father, my mind keeps replaying today and rehearsing tomorrow. I can’t fix any of it right now, lying here. Tomorrow will have its own troubles, and You’ll be there for them. So for tonight, I’m closing the tabs in my head one by one and handing them to You. Let my thoughts slow down, and my body follow. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the morning after a night you actually slept.

Lord, I slept! Thank You. I don’t take a good night’s rest for granted. You kept watch while I knew nothing at all, and now there’s a new day. Let me spend the energy You’ve restored on the things that matter to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
