Bedtime Prayers

For the moment you get into bed. Grown-up bedtime prayers, because adults need someone to tuck them in too.

“In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety.”Psalm 4:8 · World English Bible

Often searched as “bedtime prayers christian”.

Lord, I’m getting into bed now. The lights are off and the day is over. Thank You for every good thing in it. I’m sorry for the moments I was impatient or unkind. I leave my to-do list, my worries, and the people I love with You. Let me lie down in peace and sleep, because You alone keep me safe. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Often searched as “prayers to say before bed” or “night prayer before bed”.

Father, before I go to bed, I want to talk to You. Not about everything, just this: You were here today, and You’ll be here tonight. Search my heart and show me anything I need to make right tomorrow. Then let me rest. I don’t have to hold the world together while I sleep. You do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the one who checks the locks and pays the bills.

Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. Psalm 131:2

Lord, no one tucks me in anymore. I’m the one who checks the locks, pays the bills, and lies awake doing math in the dark. Tonight, let me be Your child again. Take the grown-up weight off my chest for a few hours. Hold me the way a parent holds a sleepy kid, and let me rest. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The last words before your eyes close. Often searched as “short prayer before sleep”.

Into your hand I commend my spirit. You redeem me, Yahweh, God of truth. Psalm 31:5

Lord, as I close my eyes, I trust You with this night. Guard my sleep, quiet my mind, and give my body rest. Into Your hands I commit my spirit. Wake me in the morning ready to love You and serve You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Looking back over the day with God before you sleep.

Lord, before I sleep, I look back over today with You. Where did I see You? Thank You for that. Where did I turn away from You? Forgive me for that. What’s still weighing on me? I give it to You now. And tomorrow, help me follow You a little more closely. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the moment you finally plug it in for the night.

Lord, I’ve been scrolling too long again. The news, the feeds, the messages: my mind is full and my heart is restless. I’m putting the phone down now. Turn the noise off inside me too. Let the last voice I listen to tonight be Yours, and let me sleep without carrying the whole internet to bed. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For after the kids are finally asleep.

Lord, the kids are finally asleep and I’m running on empty. Thank You for them, even on days like today. Forgive me for snapping. Fill in what I couldn’t give them. Watch over their dreams. And for the next few hours, let me rest too, knowing You’ll wake with me if they need me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a quiet house, after a move, a divorce, or the loss of a spouse.

Lord, the house is quiet and the other side of the bed is empty. Some nights I like the peace; some nights the silence is heavy. Either way, You are here. Be close to me in this room. Guard my door, calm my heart, and remind me as I fall asleep that I’m never really alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the other end of the night.

Good morning, Lord. You kept me through the night, and here I am. Thank You for sleep, for this new day, and for mercies that are new again this morning. Before I check anything else, I check in with You. Lead me today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
