Yahweh will command his loving kindness in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the God of my life. Psalm 42:8

Lord, it’s midnight. The house is dark and the world is quiet, and I’m awake with You. At midnight I will rise to give You thanks, because Your ways are right. Whatever kept me up tonight, I bring it here. Meet me in this quiet hour, and let me find, in the middle of the night, that You’ve been here all along. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Paul and Silas prayed and sang hymns at midnight in a prison cell. For praising God in a hard place.

But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Acts 16:25

Lord, at midnight Paul and Silas sang to You from a prison cell, with their feet in chains. I’m not in prison, but I’m in a hard place. Tonight I choose to praise You anyway. You are good. You are faithful. You are near. Let my praise rise in the dark, and let it open doors only You can open. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Two psalms about praying in the night, and a short prayer built on them.

At midnight I will rise to give thanks to you, because of your righteous ordinances. Psalm 119:62

Look! Praise Yahweh, all you servants of Yahweh, who stand by night in Yahweh’s house! Lift up your hands in the sanctuary. Praise Yahweh! Psalm 134:1-2

Lord, I rise at midnight to thank You. I lift my hands to You in the dark, like Your servants who stood watch in Your house by night. Bless the Lord, O my soul, at every hour. Amen.

For when it’s past midnight and you’re still awake.

My soul shall be satisfied as with the richest food. My mouth shall praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches. Psalm 63:5-6

Lord, it’s past midnight and I’m still awake. Instead of scrolling, I’m turning to You. Let my bed be a place where I remember You and think about You through the night watches. If this wakefulness has a purpose, show me who to pray for. If not, give me sleep. Either way, I’m Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When someone is on your heart in the middle of the night.

Father, someone is on my heart at midnight. I don’t know exactly what they’re facing right now, but You do. Wherever they are tonight, surround them with Your care. Give them strength, protection, and peace. Let them feel, somehow, that someone is praying for them in the middle of the night. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For everyone awake at midnight because someone needs them.

He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Psalm 121:3-4

Lord, at midnight the world doesn’t stop. Bless the nurses on the night shift, the parents up with a crying baby, the family sitting by a hospital bed, the drivers on the highway, the officers on patrol. You neither slumber nor sleep. Be their strength in these hours, and get each of them home safe. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When your mind is running in circles.

Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth. Psalm 46:10

Jesus, it’s midnight, and my mind is running in circles. Speak peace to the storm in me the way You spoke to the wind and the waves. Be still, my soul. The night is Yours, and so am I. Let me rest in Your peace now, and wake up to a better morning. In Your name, amen.

For the morning after a midnight prayer.

Good morning, Lord. I was up in the night, but You were up longer. Thank You for meeting me in the dark. Now give me enough energy for today, and let me live this day like someone who has been with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
