Prayers Against Pride

Pride is the sin we notice last.

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

Lord, I don’t see my pride the way You do. Show me where it’s hiding: in how I talk about myself, how I judge others, how hard it is for me to say I’m sorry. Break it, gently, before it breaks me. I don’t want to be impressive. I want to be Yours. Teach me to live humbly, and to let You get the credit. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When you know you need help with it.

Father, I’m asking You to deal with the pride in me. Where I’ve thought I was better than someone, forgive me. Where I’ve refused help, soften me. Where I’ve taken credit, remind me that everything I have is a gift. Give me the kind of strength that doesn’t need to win. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Ask Him to look, because you can’t.

Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way. Psalm 139:23-24

God, search me. Look at my heart and show me what is there. If there is pride, show me. I’d rather be corrected by You now than humbled by life later. Lead me in the right way, and give me friends who will tell me the truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.

If you want to take pride in the right things.

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does Yahweh require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8

Lord, I want to take pride in the right things: honest work, faithful love, and a clear conscience. Keep me from the kind of pride that looks down on others. Teach me to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with You. Let my confidence come from who You say I am. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Short, for the moment you catch it.

Lord, I’m too proud, and I know it. Humble me before I’m humiliated. Give me a soft heart and a quiet mouth. Let me serve instead of being seen. Thank You for loving me when I’m hard to love. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before you have anything to prove today.

Lord, before the day starts, I put myself down at Your feet. Make me humble, not weak. Help me listen more than I speak, and give credit where it’s due. When I’m tempted to prove myself, remind me that I’m already loved. In Jesus’ name, amen.
