Night Prayer

The day is done. Christian prayers for the night hours, whether you’re going to sleep or still awake.

“Yahweh will command his loving kindness in the daytime. In the night his song shall be with me: a prayer to the God of my life.”Psalm 42:8 · World English Bible

The one to end any day with. Often searched as “night prayer” or “nighttime prayer”.

Lord, the day is done and the night has come. You carried me through every hour of it, and I’m grateful. What I finished, I give back to You. What I didn’t, I leave in Your hands until morning. Forgive me where I failed today. Guard my home, my heart, and the people I love through the dark hours, because You never sleep. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Night prayers

Pick the one that fits today.

The same simple shape every night: thanks, sorry, trust. Often searched as “nite prayer”.

Father, here I am again at the end of the day, like every night. Thank You for the good things today, even the small ones. I’m sorry for the things I got wrong. I trust You with tomorrow. Keep me and everyone I love safe tonight, and let me wake up ready to follow You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Built on Psalm 121: the God who never sleeps. Often searched as “short powerful night prayer”.

He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Psalm 121:3-4

Lord God, You don’t slumber and You don’t sleep. Tonight I place my body, my mind, my family, and my home under Your care. Whatever worries came home with me today, I lay them at Your feet. You are the keeper of my life, my going out and my coming in. Let Your peace stand guard over my heart, and let me rest. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Five lines for when you’re too tired for more. Often searched as “simple night prayer”.

Lord, thank You for today. Forgive what I did wrong. Watch over the people I love. Give me peaceful sleep and a fresh start in the morning. Into Your hands I give this night. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For tonight in particular. Often searched as “night prayer for today” or “tonight’s prayer”.

Lord, this is my prayer for tonight. You saw everything today: the conversation that went wrong, the news I’m still thinking about, the thing I’m afraid will happen tomorrow. Tonight I don’t need all the answers. I just need You. Sit with me in this quiet room, and let Your presence be enough until morning. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Counting the day’s gifts before you close your eyes. Often searched as “good prayers to pray at night”.

God, before I close my eyes, I want to count what You gave me today. Breath in my lungs. Food on the table. A message from a friend. Strength for the hard part. You were faithful in every hour, even the ones when I didn’t notice You. Thank You. Let me fall asleep grateful. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Nights are hardest when you’re sick.

For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning. Psalm 30:5

Lord, nights are hardest when the body hurts. The pain feels louder and the worries feel bigger in the dark. I bring You this body tonight, and the bodies of the people I love who are sick. You are the God who heals. Ease the pain enough to let us sleep. Work while we rest, and give us strength for tomorrow. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For nurses, drivers, guards, and caregivers heading to work as everyone else goes to bed.

Lord, while everyone else is going to bed, I’m heading to work. Keep me alert and careful through the long hours. Bless the patients, passengers, or people I’ll serve tonight. When I’m tired, give me patience. When it’s quiet, remind me You’re awake too. And when my shift ends, give me deep sleep in the daylight. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For waiting up: a teenager, a spouse on the road, a friend who isn’t answering.

Father, someone I love isn’t home yet. I keep checking my phone. Watch over them on the road tonight. Keep them out of danger and away from bad choices, and bring them home safe. While I wait, quiet the worst-case pictures in my mind, and help me trust You with them. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Two verses to pray before sleep. Often searched as “night time prayers from the bible”.

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety. Psalm 4:8

My soul shall be satisfied as with the richest food. My mouth shall praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches. Psalm 63:5-6

Lord, I lie down in peace tonight, because You keep me safe. Let my last thoughts today be of You, and let my first thoughts tomorrow be of You too. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The last thing before you sleep: give tomorrow morning to God.

Lord, before I sleep, I give You tomorrow. When the alarm goes off, help me get up without dread. Let the first thing I do be to talk to You. Prepare the day ahead of me, and let me meet it rested and ready. In Jesus’ name, amen.
