Prayers for Comfort

For the hard nights and the long weeks. Prayers for when you hurt, and for the people you love who do.

“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.”Psalm 34:18 · World English Bible

For the first days after a loss, when you don’t know what to say. Often searched as “prayer for comfort in grief”.

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18

Lord, I don’t know how to pray right now, so I’m only telling You what is true: I am hurting. The house is quiet in the wrong way. Be close to me in the hours I can’t fill. Help me eat something and sleep a little. Send people who will sit with me without trying to fix this. Hold the one I’ve lost in Your care, and hold me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Comforting prayers

Pick the one that fits today.

To pray over a friend who is carrying something heavy. Often searched as “prayer of comfort”.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Father, my friend is carrying something heavy, and I can’t take it from them. So I place them in Your hands. Comfort them where I can’t reach. Give them sleep tonight and one small good thing tomorrow. Help me show up, listen more than I talk, and stay after the casseroles stop coming. Be the comfort that does not run out. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a tight chest and a mind that won’t slow down. Often searched as “prayers for peace and comfort”.

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

God of peace, my chest is tight and my thoughts will not stop racing. I breathe in, and I give You this worry. I breathe out, and I let it go. You have not asked me to hold everything together. Settle my body, slow my mind, and let Your peace keep watch over me, even in this unsettled hour. Be near, and let me feel it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the middle of the night, when the quiet makes everything louder.

Lord, it is the middle of the night, and the quiet makes everything louder. I give You what I can’t solve before morning. Comfort me the way You comforted the frightened disciples in the storm: by being in the boat. Let my body rest, even if my mind is slow to follow. Whatever tomorrow brings, You are already in it. Give me peace enough to close my eyes. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when you have nothing left to say. Often searched as “comforting prayer”.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4

Lord, I have no words tonight. Not even good ones. You know what this feels like from the inside, so let my silence be my prayer. Sit with me. Don’t rush me, and don’t explain it to me yet. When I’m ready, speak softly. Until then, let it be enough that You are here and that I am not alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when the plan fell apart: the job, the diagnosis, the life you thought you were headed for. Often searched as “prayer for strength and comfort”.

Those who wait for the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

Father, the plan I had is gone: the job, the news, the life I thought I was headed for. I’m angry and tired and afraid of what comes next. Comfort me where this hurts, and give me strength for today only. Not next year. Today. Show me the next step, even a small one, and walk it with me. Thank You that You have not left. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a sickroom, a waiting room, or the long hours of caring for someone. Often searched as “prayer for comfort and healing”.

Lord, there is sickness in our home, and it has changed everything. Bring healing in the way You see best, and bring comfort now, in the long hours of waiting rooms and hard news. Strengthen the ones who care for the sick, and let them rest too. Give the one who is hurting relief from pain, and give all of us the sense that You are in the room. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For loneliness: everyone else seems to belong somewhere.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

God, I feel forgotten. Everyone else seems to belong somewhere, and I’m on the edge of it all. You see me. Let that be more than a phrase tonight. Comfort me with a sign that I matter: a message, a kind word, an open door. And let me turn to You first, not last. You have never lost track of me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the grief that people think should be over by now.

Lord, I thought it would be better by now. People have moved on, and I’m still carrying this. Thank You that grief has no deadline with You. Comfort me on the anniversary days, and on the ordinary days when it ambushes me. Let me stop apologizing for how long this is taking. Heal me slowly, and do not leave me while You do it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before you look at your phone or the day ahead.

Good morning, Lord. I woke up with this weight again. Before I pick up my phone or think about the day ahead, I give it to You. Comfort me for this morning, and for just the hours in front of me. Send one kind thing my way, and help me notice it. Go with me through this day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
