Prayers After Surgery

Prayers for healing and patience in the days after an operation.

“Yahweh my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.”Psalm 30:2 · World English Bible

Short enough to say before you go in, and again when you wake up.

Lord, thank You for bringing me this far. Let the surgery be successful, and let my recovery be smooth. Give me patience in the healing, and strength for each day. Be near me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Pick the one that fits today.

For the first day, when you wake up and it’s done.

Father, thank You that it’s over, and that I’m here. Thank You for the doctors, the nurses, and the people who prayed. Help my body to heal. Take away the pain, or give me strength to bear it. Let me rest without fear, and begin to get well. I’m grateful, and I’m Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the slow weeks when you are better, but not yet well.

For I, Yahweh your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I will help you.’ Isaiah 41:13

Lord, my recovery is slow, and I get discouraged. Help me be patient with my body. Give me rest when I need it, and energy when I can. Let every stitch hold, every bone mend, every day be a little better. Remind me that healing is a process, and that You are in it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer of trust, for the days at home.

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3

God, I’m home now, and recovery is mine to do. Be with me in the quiet days. Help me follow what the doctors say, and rest when I’m told to. Keep infection and complications away. Give me hope on the hard days, and joy on the good ones. Thank You for staying with me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Asking for a speedy recovery, and for what you need while you wait.

Lord, I ask You for a speedy recovery. Heal quickly what needs to heal, and let my body come back strong. If it takes time, give me patience. If something goes wrong, give me wisdom to call for help. Thank You for every sign of progress, even the small ones. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the caregiver, and the person being cared for.

Father, bless the home where someone is recovering from surgery. Give the patient rest, and give the caregiver strength. Help us be kind to each other when we’re tired. Let the days be gentle. Thank You for bringing us through. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the surgery itself: that everything goes the way it should.

Lord, I ask that this operation be a success. Let everything go as planned. Let the surgeon see what needs to be seen, and do what needs to be done. Let nothing be missed. Bring the patient through safely, and let this be the beginning of healing. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When you only need one thing: that it goes well.

God, I ask that the surgery go well. Not perfectly in my eyes, but well in Yours. Give wisdom to the team, and peace to the family. Whatever happens, I trust You to be in it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Start the day of healing with Him.

Lord, thank You for this morning. Help me heal a little more today. Give me patience with my body, kindness for the people helping me, and hope that doesn’t run out. Keep me from rushing, and keep me from giving up. In Jesus’ name, amen.
