Prayers Before Surgery

Prayers for the night before, the morning of, and for someone you love going into surgery.

“Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you.”Isaiah 41:10 · World English Bible

For the night before, when you are the one going in.

Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Isaiah 41:10

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

Lord, tomorrow I go into surgery, and I’m afraid. I don’t know how it will go, but I know You will be in that room. Guide the hands of the doctors and the nurses. Keep me safe under anesthesia, and let me wake up in Your care. Take away my fear, and give me the peace that doesn’t make sense. I place my body and my life in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When someone you love is going in, and all you can do is pray.

Father, I’m praying for someone who is having surgery. You know their name, their body, and their fear. Be with them in the waiting room and in the operating room. Steady the surgeon’s hands, and watch over every moment. Give the people who love them peace while they wait. Bring them through safely, and let them wake up knowing they were never alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For everyone going under the knife today.

Lord, I pray for everyone having surgery today. Be with the nervous and the calm, the young and the old. Give each surgeon a clear mind and steady hands. Give each patient courage, and each family patience. Let every operation go as it should, and let every recovery begin well. Be near to all of them. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A prayer for a friend, and something you can send to them.

I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2

God, my friend is going into surgery, and I’m asking You to be with them. Calm their nerves, and give them strength for what’s ahead. Guide the doctors, and keep everything safe and steady. Let them feel loved by the people around them, and by You. Heal what needs to be healed, and bring them home soon. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a spouse, parent, child, or sibling.

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Lord, someone I love is facing surgery, and I feel helpless. I’m giving them to You. Let the operation be successful, and let their recovery be smooth. Give the doctors wisdom, and give my family strength to wait. Hold them when I can’t. Thank You that they are Yours before they are mine. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For safety, from the first moment to the last.

Father, I ask You to keep this operation safe. Protect against mistakes, infections, and surprises. Let every instrument, every decision, and every hour be in Your care. Keep the whole team alert and calm. Bring the patient through safely, and let this be a day we thank You for. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Asking Him for the surgery, and for the healing after.

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3

Lord, I’m asking for two things: that the surgery goes well, and that the healing comes after it. Use the doctors’ skill, and use Your own power. Let what is wrong be set right. Restore health to the body, and restore strength to the spirit. I trust You with the operation, and I trust You with the days that follow. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Short, for the person holding the scalpel.

Lord, guide the surgeon’s hands today. Give them focus, skill, and calm. Let them see clearly, and decide wisely. Give them rest when it’s over. Thank You for the gift of this work. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A few lines to say in the hallway, or on the phone.

Lord, be with my family member today. Calm their heart, guide the doctors, and bring them through safely. Let them feel Your peace, and let us feel it too. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the weeks of waiting before the date.

God, my surgery is coming, and the waiting is hard. Help me not to spend every night imagining the worst. Give me peace in the days before. Help me prepare, ask good questions, and rest. Let me trust You with the date, the doctors, and the outcome. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When the surgery is part of a harder fight.

Father, this surgery is part of a bigger fight, and I’m tired and scared. Guide the surgeon, and let every cell be removed that should be. Give strength for the days after, and hope for the days ahead. Let the people around us carry what we can’t. Whatever comes next, don’t let us walk it alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A short message to send before they go in.

Thinking of you today, and praying for you. May God steady the doctors’ hands, calm your heart, and bring you through safely. You are not alone. I’m here, and so is He. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before you leave for the hospital, or while you wait for news.

Lord, today is the day. Before I go, I give this to You. Help me breathe, and trust You with every step. Be with the doctors, the nurses, and everyone who loves me. Let me carry Your peace into that room. Whatever happens today, I am Yours. In Jesus’ name, amen.
