Easter Prayers

He is risen. Prayers for Easter morning, for the sunrise, for the family, and for the ones spending the day alone.

“He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying.”Matthew 28:6 · World English Bible

For the morning. Often searched as “prayer easter” or “prayer for easter”.

He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying. Matthew 28:6

But now Christ has been raised from the dead. He became the first fruits of those who are asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:20

Risen Lord, this is the morning the whole story turns on. The stone is rolled away, and death does not have the last word. Thank You for love that went all the way to the cross and out the other side. Fill this day with gladness. Let the news be as fresh to me as it was to the women running from the tomb. He is risen. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the church and the household. Often searched as “christian easter prayers”.

But now Christ has been raised from the dead. He became the first fruits of those who are asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:20

Father, we gather in the light of the empty tomb. Because Christ was raised, our faith is not empty, our sins are forgiven, and our dead are not lost. Give us the joy that cannot be taken away. Make us people of the resurrection: forgiving, hopeful, and unafraid. Let us live this week, and every week, as those who have seen the Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A short prayer for the whole day, from sunrise to bedtime.

This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it! Psalm 118:24

Lord, on this Easter day we say what we have been waiting to say: Christ is risen! Let the church bells ring and the quiet houses sing. Let the tired be refreshed and the grieving be held. Bless every table, every church, every hospital room, and every empty chair. This is the day You have made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Easter is fifty days, not one. For the weeks after the lilies fade.

Lord, Easter is not one day; it is fifty. Keep me in the joy of the resurrection long after the lilies fade. Let me practice gladness on ordinary Tuesdays. Help me notice where You are rising in my life: a friendship mended, a prayer answered slowly, a small hope coming back. Let this season keep working in me until Pentecost. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the service, or the pew you cannot get to. Often searched as “prayer for easter sunday”.

Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene went early, while it was still dark, to the tomb, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb. John 20:1

Lord Jesus, this Sunday we remember that You were not held by the tomb. Thank You for the women who went early in the dark and found the stone moved. Give us that same early courage. Let the news of Your resurrection change the way we speak, work, and love this week. We ask it in the name of the risen Christ. Amen.

In the tradition of the season. Often searched as “easter prayer catholic” or “easter sunday prayer catholic”.

Risen Lord, Alleluia! You are the Lamb who was slain and now lives. By Your death You destroyed our death, and by Your rising You restored our life. Fill us with the joy of this feast. Keep us faithful to the promises of our baptism, and lead us to the Easter that has no end. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the first light, outdoors or at a window.

Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. Mark 16:2

Lord, we stand in the first light, as the women once did. It was dark when they came, and they did not know what they would find. Thank You that the light always comes after the longest night. Let this sunrise remind us that nothing You have raised can be buried again. We welcome the day, and we welcome You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A short one for little ones. Say it one line at a time.

Dear Jesus, thank You for Easter. You died on the cross because You love us, and then You came back to life. The tomb is empty! Thank You for new life, for spring, for family, and for good food. Help us to be kind and share what we have. We love You. Amen.

For the house on Easter morning. Often searched as “easter prayer for family and friends”.

Lord, bless our family this Easter. Thank You for each person here: the ones who came early to help and the ones who just arrived. Where there are old hurts, let the new life of Easter soften us. Where there are empty chairs, let Your presence fill the space. Let this day be a gift we give each other: patience, laughter, and a little grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

In a hospital bed, far from home, or in a quiet apartment.

I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you. John 14:18

When therefore it was evening, on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were locked where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the middle, and said to them, “Peace be to you.” John 20:19

Risen Lord, I am spending Easter alone, or in a hospital bed, or far from home. It does not feel like a holiday. But You walked into a locked room and stood among frightened people, and You stand in mine. Be near to me today. Let me hear You say my name. Let me know I am not forgotten. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the Thomas in all of us.

Then he said to Thomas, “Reach here your finger, and see my hands. Reach here your hand, and put it into my side. Don’t be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and have believed.” John 20:27-29

Lord, I want to believe, and some days I am not sure. Meet me the way You met Thomas, with patience and with Your wounds on show. I will not pretend to a certainty I do not have. Take my honest doubt and make it the beginning of faith. My Lord and my God, help my unbelief. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the minute the alarm goes off on Easter.

Good morning, Lord. Christ is risen, and I am awake to hear it. Let this alarm be the first Easter bell of my day. Before I check anything else, I give You this morning and everyone I will see. Go with me, risen Lord, into every room I walk into today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
