9/11 Prayer

September 11, 2001. Prayers to remember the people who died, and to pray for the ones who still carry that day.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”Matthew 5:4 · World English Bible

For the anniversary. Often searched as “9 11 prayer” or “prayers about 9 11”.

Lord, today we remember September 11, 2001. We remember the nearly three thousand people who died, the firefighters and police who ran toward danger, and the passengers who fought back. Comfort the families who still feel the empty place at their table. Heal the ones who still carry the trauma of that day. And keep us from hatred. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a memorial service or a moment of silence. Often searched as “9 11 memorial prayers”.

God of all comfort, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11. Each one was a person You made and loved: a parent, a child, a friend, a coworker. We hold their memory before You. Bless the families who still grieve, the survivors who still struggle, and the responders who still suffer from that day. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the ones who ran in, and the ones still sick from Ground Zero.

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

Lord, on September 11, firefighters climbed stairs that led to their deaths so others could live. Thank You for that kind of courage. Bless the first responders serving today, and the ones still sick from the dust and smoke of Ground Zero. Protect them, heal them, and honor their sacrifice. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For whom September 11 isn’t history.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away. Revelation 21:4

Lord, for some families, September 11 is not history. It’s the day their father, mother, son, or daughter never came home. Be near them today as the names are read. Comfort the children who grew up without a parent. Bless them with Your peace, and with the hope that death will not have the last word. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Praying that hatred won’t be our answer.

Father, the attacks on September 11 were born of hatred. Don’t let hatred be our answer. Protect us from violence and terror, and give wisdom to those who keep us safe. Help us love our neighbors of every background, and work for a world where no one wants to do this again. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before the day gets busy.

Good morning, Lord. It’s September 11. Before the day gets busy, I stop to remember. Thank You for the gift of this ordinary morning, which so many never got. Help me hold my people a little longer today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
