Prayer for Hope

For the days when you can’t see how this gets better, and you need something to hold on to.

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.”Romans 15:13 · World English Bible

For the days when you can’t see how this gets better. Pray it slowly, and let God hold the part you can’t.

God, I’m running low on hope, and I’m tired of pretending I’m not. I’ve looked at this from every side, and I can’t see how it gets better. But You see what I can’t. You were working before I knew there was a problem, and You haven’t stopped. So I’m bringing You what’s left of my hope, small as it is. Hold it for me when I can’t. Let me believe that this is not where the story ends. Give me enough light for the next step, and the faith to take it. You are the God of hope. Fill me again. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Nine prayers for hope

Pick the one that fits today.

For when you only have a moment. Say it once, or say it every time the fear comes back.

Lord, I’m holding on by a thread today. Be the One holding the other end. I don’t need to see the whole way. I just need to know You’re in it. Lift my eyes from what I’m afraid of to who You are. Give me hope for this hour, and I’ll trust You with the next. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When believing has gotten harder than it used to be, and you want it back.

Father, I used to believe more easily than I do now. Somewhere along the way, the disappointments piled up, and my faith got quieter. I still want to trust You. I’m just not sure how to start again. So I’m starting here, honestly. Meet the little faith I have and make it grow. Where I expect the worst, teach me to hope. Where I have stopped asking, give me the courage to ask again. Remind me of every time You came through before. I don’t have to feel strong to be held. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For when you need both: a reason to keep going, and the strength to do it.

Lord, I need two things today, and I’m short on both. I need hope that this is worth it, and strength to keep showing up. I’m not asking You to take everything away. I’m asking You to meet me in the middle of it. Be the strength I don’t have when I wake up. Be the hope I can’t find when I’m tired. When I want to give up, remind me that You haven’t given up on me. Let me lean on You and not on how I feel. One step, then another. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When you feel unseen, and you need to hear that you haven’t been forgotten.

God, I need encouragement today, and I don’t know who to ask. I feel unseen, like what I’m doing doesn’t matter. But You see me. You know what I carry when no one else is watching. Speak to me in a way I can’t miss, through Your Word, through a friend, through a quiet moment. Lift my head. Remind me that I am Yours, and that nothing I do for You is wasted. Let hope rise in me again, not because things are easy, but because You are good. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a season that keeps getting harder, when hope feels like something other people have.

Lord, I’m in a season I didn’t choose, and I don’t know how long it will last. Some days I feel hopeless, and I’m ashamed to say it. But You are not afraid of my honesty. You stayed with Your people in deserts and storms and prisons, and You are staying with me. Hold me together in the waiting. When everything in me says nothing will change, remind me that You make all things new. Let me wake up tomorrow still trusting You, even if nothing has changed yet. Better days are coming. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When you’re waiting on news, a result, or a decision you can’t control.

Father, I’m waiting on something I can’t control, and the waiting is loud. You know what I’m hoping for. I’m asking You for a good outcome, and I’m not afraid to ask. But more than the result, I want to trust You with it. Calm my mind while I wait. Keep me from imagining the worst a hundred times. If the answer is yes, let me thank You. If it’s not, let me still know that You are good. Whatever comes, be with me when it comes. My hope is in You, not in the result. In Jesus’ name, amen.

When you can’t see what’s next, and not knowing keeps you up at night.

God, I can’t see what’s ahead, and it scares me more than I admit. I keep trying to plan my way out of the fear. But You already know the future, and You are already there. I give You the plans I’m holding too tightly. Lead me one step at a time. Open the doors You want open, and close the ones You don’t. Give me a hope that is bigger than my questions. When I worry about years from now, bring me back to today, where You are with me. My future is safe in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Read these slowly, out loud if you can. When hope is hard to find, let God’s promises speak first.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God. Psalm 42:11

Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in Yahweh. Psalm 31:24

Before the news, before the messages, before the day tells you what to expect.

Lord, before I check anything else, I’m turning to You. Your mercies are new this morning, and I need new mercy. Yesterday’s worries are still here, but so are You. Give me hope for today, not for every day at once. Let me notice where You are working, even in small things. Help me speak hope to someone who needs it. When the day gets heavy, call me back to this moment, back to You. I’m starting this day with You, and I want to end it with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
