But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry. Luke 4:1-2

Lord, You went into the wilderness before me. When I am hungry and tempted, remind me that I do not live on bread alone. Let Your words feed me.

What fasting is for.

Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? Isn’t it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh? Isaiah 58:6-7

Moreover when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:16-18

Father, show me the fast You choose. Free me from what binds me, and make me generous with what I have. Let my giving be quiet, and my fasting be real.

Ash Wednesday, and every day after it.

By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Genesis 3:19

For he knows how we are made. He remembers that we are dust. Psalm 103:14

Lord, You know how I am made, and You remember that I am dust. Let that be a comfort and not a shame. Hold me gently, and teach me to rely on You.

For the fast, and the longing under it.

God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water. Psalm 63:1

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6

God, You are my God, and I am seeking You. Let my hunger be for You, and let me be filled. I thirst for You in a dry and weary land.

For the long middle, when you are worn out.

Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18

Jesus, I am tired, and Lent is long. I come to You with what I carry. Give me rest, and be near to me in the weakness I feel.

Confession is a relief, not a punishment.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:1-2

Father, I confess what I did and what I left undone. Thank You that You are faithful to forgive. Wash me, and give me a fresh start today.

The long wait for Easter morning.

Yahweh is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of Yahweh. Lamentations 3:25-26

I wait for Yahweh. My soul waits. I hope in his word. Psalm 130:5

Lord, I wait for You. My soul waits, and in Your word I hope. Teach me to wait well, and to trust that the morning is coming.

One verse before the day begins.

“Yet even now,” says Yahweh, “turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.” Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to Yahweh, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity. Joel 2:12-13

Good morning, Lord. Let me carry one word from You into this day: turn to me, and be gracious to me. I give You these hours, and I ask You to lead me through them.
