Lord, I am dust, and You know it. You made me from the ground and breathed life into me, and You have not forgotten what I am made of. Today I begin the road to Easter with ashes and honesty. Wash me of what I have been carrying that is not Yours. Turn my heart toward You, and keep it turned. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Merciful God, today the season of repentance begins. Let me see myself honestly, not with harshness, and not with excuses. Show me where I have drifted. Father of mercy, as I receive the ashes, let them be a sign of turning back to You. Remember that I am dust, and to dust I shall return. Let this season be one of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving done in humility and love. Strengthen my resolve, and bring me to the joy of Easter. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the minute you are standing in line or sitting in the pew.

Lord, in a moment I will be marked with ashes. I am not here to look holy. I am here because I need You. Quiet my thoughts, and let this small sign mean something to me. Remind me that I belong to You, dust and all. Let me leave this place a little closer to You than I came. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For the walk back to your car or your desk with the mark still there.

Lord, I am walking back into the day with ashes on my face. I may be asked about them, or I may not. Let this mark be a quiet prayer, and let me not be proud of it or ashamed of it. Help me be a little kinder than usual, and a little slower to complain. I am Yours today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

If you could not get to a service. You can still begin Lent from where you are.

God, I could not get to church today, but I am here. Receive me in this room. You are not limited by walls, and You are not waiting at a door I cannot reach. Remember me, who am dust. Turn my heart to You, and let these forty days begin in this ordinary place. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Not a list of sins. One honest thing.

Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:1-2

Lord, there is one thing I keep holding onto: a grudge, a habit, a fear, or a story about myself. I have not been able to put it down. Today I name it before You. I do not have to fix it before I come. Take the ashes of it, and let it be dust. Teach me to hold it more loosely each day. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Short enough to say with a child before school.

Dear God, today Lent begins. We are getting ready for Easter. Help us be kind and tell the truth. Help us share with people who need it. Thank You for loving us even when we make mistakes. Be with us all day long. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before the day starts.

Good morning, Lord. Today we begin the road to Easter. Before I do anything else, I give You this day and these forty. Lead me gently. Show me what to leave behind and what to take up. Be with me when I am tired, and bring me back to You tonight. In Jesus’ name, amen.
